Join me today in celebrating the lives and works of two amazing leaders of the early witchcraft revival: craft elders Leo Martello, who was born on this day in 1930, and Patricia Crowther, who transitioned to the Summerlands on September 24. I only knew Patricia Crowther through our mutual connection to Leo, who introduced sixteen-year-old me to her autobiography, Witch Blood! Diary of a High Priestess.
Leo Louis Martello (1930–2000) was a trailblazing figure in both the modern witchcraft revival and the early gay rights movement. As an outspoken author, activist, and founder of the Strega tradition—rooted in Italian witchcraft—Martello championed the importance of reclaiming ancestral spirituality and personal empowerment. He played a pivotal role in making witchcraft more accessible and understandable, working tirelessly to debunk misconceptions and foster a sense of community. Martello was also a courageous advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, co-founding the Gay Rights Radicals and vocally supporting sexual freedom and equality during a time of widespread discrimination. Through his writing, public appearances, and organizational leadership, Leo Martello left an enduring legacy of liberation, authenticity, and compassion within both the magical and LGBTQ+ communities.
Patricia Crowther (born 1927) was a pioneering figure in the early modern Witchcraft movement, renowned as one of the foremost High Priestesses who helped shape contemporary Paganism in Britain and beyond. Alongside her husband, Arnold Crowther, she was instrumental in publicizing and demystifying the practice of Wicca during a time when witchcraft was still met with deep suspicion. Through her books, such as “Witch Blood! Diary of a High Priestess,” and her tireless public speaking and media appearances, Patricia Crowther brought a message of spiritual empowerment, reverence for nature, and the importance of personal growth and community.
